SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS OF CHANGING VEHICLE EXTERIOR DIMENSIONS AND RELEVANT VEHICLE PROPORTIONS

Abstract For the user perception of vehicles and consequently success automobile design, body layout especially proportions are pivotal. In present study, SAE main dimensions length (L108), wheelbase (L101), height (H100) width (W103) 697 from different OEMs were examined. The analysis reveals a tendency increasing length, in recent years. Regarding ratios these there clear correlations, as revealed by an with linear regression. We find particular strong synchrony increases pairs W103 - L108 L101 lesser so between ratio E = L108/L101 vehicle length. latter can be explained high being less compact, i.e. proportion increases. Finally, it is discussed whether technological changes lead to revolutionary or evolutionary dimensions. historical development moderate proportional BEVs indicate measurable but development. contrast, disruptive technologies such automated driving significantly change thus encourage more proportions.
